Descripción - Reseña del editor The name Finistere means literally ‘the end of the earth’, derived from the Latin ‘terrae’ in a similar way as Lands End in Cornwall. The Breton translation however can also mean ‘head of the world’ so it rather depends on your point of view! There is no connection with Finnisterre in Spain, other than the similarity in the names. Finistere is one of the four departments that make up modern Brittany and is where the Breton language is still most commonly spoken with many Breton schools teaching it alongside French. Finistere is the most westerly part of mainland France and has a long, rugged and exposed coastline. Not surprisingly it took a while for main line railways to penetrate Finistere but the port of Brest was an obvious destination and both the Ouest and Paris Orleans railways built lines into the department, the Ouest from Rennes reaching Brest in 1865. The metre gauge Reseau Breton system was centred on Carhaix which is just inside the department and lines radiated out from there, reaching Camaret, Morlaix and Rosporden. That still left a lot of Finistere without any railways though, and it is the narrow gauge lines that were built from 1893 onwards to serve these towns and villages that are the subject of this book. The Reseau Breton is well know and has been the subject of numerous books and articles but the other lines have passed into history virtually unnoticed, leaving few tangible remains. The book collects as much information about them as possible and presents it for the first time in English.
